CI news passes 600

It’s a small milestone, but there are now more than 600 entries in the “CI news” section on the www.scip.org web page. Many of the entries are from individual blogs, and I’ve been amazed at the diversity of sources and disciplines that not only use the term “competitive intelligence,” but can actually understand it.

By just searching the Google blog section on CI, I’ve seen CI posts from law firm libraries, human resources departments, executive search firms, mergers and acquisition law firms, and private investigators. I’ve also caught references to items such as the Airbus Boeing report situation that often becomes a full-brown media event.

Although we often have issues with the usability of the term “competitive intelligence,” it’s entered mainstream usage, for good or ill. Search Google, and the phrase has appeared over 12,900 times over 2007-2008; search Google Scholar for the same time, and you have about 2000 references. (Take the date limits off and you have 1,750,000 and 13,200 entries respectively.)

Although the CI news entries are limited to English material (I am linguistically challenged), non-English blogs increasingly cover CI, especially in Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Chinese. (If any of you have skills in these languages and would be willing to review these blogs, please let me know.) As SCIP expands its global presence, understanding what is being discussed in these areas is even more important.
